Profile: The Soonwaldsteig...

Plateaus of raw beauty give way to deeply cut river valleys; wide expanses of broadleaf forests provide fresh, oxygen-rich air, creating a healthy climate for walking.

Walking and being at one with nature

Rediscover your thirst for adventure: narrow paths through seemingly impenetrable woodland lead to hidden wonders of nature. The energy expended on the ascents is amply rewarded with stunning views, while the bizarrely shaped rocks are just begging to be conquered.

Walking in harmony with nature and walking as an end in itself is what the Soonwald Trail is all about. It's a bold claim to make but one that holds water: plateaus of raw beauty give way to deeply cut valleys; wide expanses of broadleaf forests pump out fresh, oxygen-rich air, creating a healthy climate for walking. As well as the incredible variety of flora and fauna, there are legacies of a dramatic geological past to discover. Timeworn ruins are hidden deep in the forest, while the hilltop castles and historical sites bear witness to Celts, Romans and the Middle Ages.

The new premium trail, which opened in May 2009, runs from Bingen in the romantic Rhine valley across the densely wooded quartzite hills of the Soonwald forest to Kirn in the idyllic Hahnenbach valley. Along the way, you can look forward to the sort of unspoilt natural beauty that is seldom found in this day and age. The richly varied Soonwald-Nahe nature park with its havens of tranquillity provides inspiration and invigoration in equal measure.
