Enjoy wine in the Moselle valley

One of Germany's most spectacular wine regions clings to the twisting banks of the river Moselle and its tributaries, the Ruwer and the Saar. Today's vineyards cover approx. 9,000 hectares of steep, terraced hillsides, most facing south or southwest and stretching from Koblenz to Trier and Saarburg via Cochem and Bernkastel-Kues. Half of the vines grow on steep slatey slopes. Inclines of up to 60 % are not unusual here, although it may seem hard to believe that it is possible to cultivate such steep, craggy slopes. The Calmont vineyard at Bremm with its 68% gradient is the steepest vineyard in Europe. Riesling fans will be in raptures!

White wines of the Moselle valley

Think of the Moselle and you immediately think of wonderful rieslings from the region's best hillside vineyards. A creative generation of wine growers has produced outstanding, dry rieslings from wonderfully ripe grapes that are often not harvested until November. It is not rare for Moselle, Saar and Ruwer rieslings with an alcohol content of 7 or 8% to qualify as wines of the finest quality (Prädikatsweine). These are the ideal accompaniment for light Moselle cuisine such as fish, poultry and salads.

Müller-Thurgau grapes are mostly planted in the large plateau vineyards of the Middle Moselle and on the more gentle slopes of the Lower Moselle. Overall they account for 18% of the wine growing area and they have a pleasant, mild, flowery taste.

This is one of the most important new white wine grape varieties, a cross between a silvaner x riesling and Müller-Thurgau. These wines are fruity and full-bodied with low acidity.

Red wines of the Moselle valley

Blauer Spätburgunder (pinot noir)
Spätburgunder (pinot noir) is planted in the traditional Riesling vineyards along the Moselle and in the limestone soils of the Upper Moselle. It has a delicate fruity taste and currently accounts for only a small fraction of the total wine growing area.
