Lush meadows, verdant forests, a gentle breeze: it can only be the Westerwald. And through the heart of this glorious region runs the Westerwald-Steig, 235 kilometres of natural beauty where every step brings a new delight. The trail runs through eight different natural environments: the Hessian Westerwald, the Upper Westerwald/Lake Wiesensee, the Westerwald lakes, Kroppach Switzerland, the Siegtal valley, the Raiffeisenland region, the Wied valley and the Rhine-Westerwald nature reserve.
The 235km Westerwald-Steig follows country tracks and forest paths all the way from Herborn in Hessen to Bad Hönningen on the Rhine. It also links up with the Rothaarsteig and Rheinsteig trails. Passing through unspoilt countryside, this verdant route offers a varied mix of glorious mountain ridges, dense forests, orchards and fields, along with steep hills, lofty summits affording spectacular views, gorge-like valleys and many rivers and streams.
The trail crosses Fuchskaute at an altitude of 657 metres and passes through the Holzbach gorge, where the Holzbach stream has carved a path through the basalt. Then it's on to the Westerwald lakes and Dreifeld Pond, passing by the Stöffel industrial theme park and the basalt quarry and fossil pit where finds dating back 25 million years have been unearthed. The trail then leads through the middle of the spa town of Bad Marienberg and its "sensory barefoot trail".
En route, walkers can also explore historic attractions such as Hachenburg with its old market square and eponymous castle, and the Cistercian Abbey of Marienstatt in the Nistertal valley. A short detour takes in Raiffeisenstrasse for those in search of culture. The trail now runs alongside the Wied, a little river with picturesque tributary valleys, via Waldbreitbach to the spa resort of Bad Hönningen. In Rheinbrohl, on the romantic Middle Rhine, the route passes by the ramparts, ditches and towers of the Roman Limes (UNESCO world heritage site).
