Trails to epicurean delights: Walks, wine and volcanoes

Route: From Daun across the Hunsrück hills to Bad Kreuznach via St. Wendel and Kusel

Tour the fascinating volcanic Eifel region and the Nahe region, known for its gemstones and delightful wine. An optional walk along the Eifelsteig or the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, Germany's most beautiful hiking trail, can be included in the tour.

Day 1: The captivating volcanic landscape of the Eifel region

The last volcanic eruption in the Eifel region was a mere 10,000 years ago and traces of the Eifel’s fiery history can still be discovered today. Starting in Daun, visit the three maars (volcanic crater lakes), also known as the “eyes of the Eifel”. The cold water geyser “Wallender Born” is also reminiscent of bubbling volcanoes. Enjoy regional delicacies at the idyllic mill in Üdersdorf for lunch.

Next, choose between continuing the journey on foot down the Lieser Trail or taking a drive to Manderscheid. The Lieser Trail, a section of the spectacular Eifelsteig, leads the way to a magnificent panorama of the Manderscheid Castle, rising majestically above the Lieser Valley (approx. 4 hrs.).

If driving to Manderscheid, be sure to visit the Maar Museum, which hosts amongst others a fossilised prehistoric horse and the world’s first fossilised lice, or take a trip with the Terranaut© simulator to the Earth’s interior and witness the creation of a maar.

Both trips end with an overnight stay in Kastellaun, a delightful town at the foot of an impressive fortress in the Hunsrück hills near the Rhine and Moselle rivers.

Day 2: A day outdoors on Germany's most beautiful walking trail

Begin the day with a visit to the historical old quarter and the medieval ruin of Kastellaun Castle. Continue on the Hunsrück Hill Route, which leads through low mountain ranges with beautiful, historical landscapes shaped by the Celts, Romans and Franconians.

Afterwards, stop by Morbach, a pretty village with timber-framed houses and numerous walking trails, including the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, voted Germany’s most beautiful long-distance trail.

Hop over to the nearby Erbeskopf, the highest elevation in Rhineland-Palatinate. Then, enjoy lunch at a country inn before taking a walk along the “Hunolsteiner Klammtour” - a relaxed walking tour that takes approx. 3,5 hours.

Families are recommended to stop for the night at the family-friendly hotel in Horath. Another option is to continue to Idar-Oberstein, Germany’s “gemstone capital” , for a wine tasting in the German Gemstone Museum, which hosts the largest collection of gemstones in the world.

Day 3: A blend of wine and gemstones in the Nahe region

Set off to St. Wendel in the Saarland region and explore the historical old city and the Wendelinus basilica, considered to be the most beautiful religious building in Saarland. After lunch, continue on to Bad Kreuznach, passing by Kusel, home to the Musiciansland Museum.

Continue along the Nahe Wine Route through the Nahe region, known for its gemstones and wines. The pinot noir and pinot gris are particular treasures of the region. Bad Kreuznach is the final stop of the day and an architectural delight due to the famous “bridge houses” built on the pillars of the old bridge over the Nahe River. Finish the day with a wine tasting and an overnight stay in Bad Kreuznach.
