The excellent bus service that runs ten times a day between Hahn airport and Morbach means that it only takes twenty minutes from the arrivals gate to the heart of the countryside. Whether you want to go walking or cycling or you're just looking for some peace and quiet, the Hunsrück hills bordered by the Moselle, Rhine and Nahe rivers are the place to go. Excursions to these river valleys are easily arranged. Perhaps to Bernkastel-Kues, the famous wine village on the Moselle, just 18 kilometres away or Idar-Oberstein, the gemstone and jewellery centre of Germany, in the Nahe valley.
Or you can set off on foot from Morbach itself on the quality-accredited Saar-Hunsrück trail which was named Germany's most beautiful walking trail in 2009. From Morbach the path takes you across the Ortelsbruch moor on raised wooden walkways.
History enthusiasts can visit the only site of its kind in central Europe in the Belginum Archaeological Park: a Celtic-Roman settlement which was inhabited from around 400BC until about 400AD and lay on a busy trading route from Trier to Mainz.
