The Castle of Hambach | Neustadt/Weinstrasse

Since May 1832, when the flag with the German national colours of black, red and gold first fluttered on the Kastanienberg near Neustadt, the Hambacher Schloss has come to stand for the cradle of German democracy.

»Arise, German men and boys of every rank, ablaze with the sacred spark of the fatherland and liberty, gather together!«

Some 30,000 people responded to this exhortation. Led by trumpet calls and music they marched up the hill path bedecked with garlands to the Hambach Castle. On the highest battlements of the castle they raised the black, red, and gold colours. In numerous speeches, messages of greet-ing, songs, and toasts they gave voice to their demands. Animated, even heated exchanges of ideas and opinions took place in countless conversations and discussions. In many ways this political event resembled a fairground packed with stalls, music, and merry-go-rounds.

The exhibition Hinauf, hinauf zum Schloss! is your invitation to join in the procession. Five fictitious participants in the celebration will call upon you to take part in an encounter that will give you the opportunity to learn about the festival, who participated in it, and what motivated them to do so. What were the consequences of the Hambach Festival at the time and what are its effects in the present day? A number of exciting media and interactive stations have been set up to entice people of all ages to comprehend, to learn, and to experience.
