Travel highlights and activities in the Eifel

Discover the fascinating volcanic Eifel region and learn more about its fiery past. Don't forget to visit another hot spot: The famous Nürburgring race track!

Nürburgring ... the living legend

As a race track, the Nürburgring is a living legend and is reverently called "Green Hell" by its fans. Today the ring is one of the most traditional and at the same time innovative motor sports tracks in the world. And one of Germany's most popular national monuments. Every year around two million visitors watch around 100 races and 200 other events here, such as Formula 1, DTM, the 24-hour race, as well as truck and vintage car races.
The Nürburgring also means backstage tours, driver training, off-road tours and tourist trips on the Nordschleife (North Loop). The extension of the Nürburgring in 2009 to become an all-year leisure and business centre is the most important milestone in its history since the construction of the North Loop in 1927 and the addition of the Grand Prix circuit in 1984.

Tour the fascinating volcanic Eifel

Start in Daun and visit the three maars (volcanic crater lakes), also known as the "eyes of the Eifel". The Eifel Vulkanmuseum at Daun introduces you to the region's fiery past. The cold water geyser "Wallender Born" at Wallenborn is also reminiscent of bubbling volcanoes.
Manderscheid is the next stop where you enjoy the view of the two castle ruins, rising majestically above the Lieser valley. Be sure to visit the Maar Museum, which hosts amongst others a fossilised lice, or take a trip with the simulator to the Earth's interior and witness the creation of a maar.

Castles in the Eifel

Burg Eltz: Surrounded by forests, far from any roads or modern buildings, Eltz Castle epitomises the fantasy of the untouched, unpopulated Middle Ages like no other historic building.

Great locations for spectacular castle events:
Every August the historical castle festival at Manderscheid looks back to all the best aspects of mediaeval times with a colourful spectacle brought to life at the two castle ruins in this cosy Eifel village. Niederburg Castle in Manderscheid is particularly splendid at Christmas time. The Christmas market is held on the first weekend of Advent in this picturesque setting.
Numerous events are taking place at the beautiful moated castle "Burg Satzvey" near Mechernich.

Monschau & Monreal: Beautiful villages in the Eifel

Both starting with the same syllables, both offering a beautiful scenery of half-timbered houses: The villages Monschau and Monreal are situated in completely different corners of the Eifel!
Monreal is much smaller than its Canadian near-namesake. Overlooked by two castle ruins the tiny settlement in the East-Eifel has picturesque half-timbered houses set alongside the small Elz river.
The old clothmaking town of Monschau in the North-Eifel is also overlooked by its castle. A fairytale destination where row upon row of slate-fronted, timber-framed houses stand cheek by jowl at awkward angles.

Mystical, romantic, magical...the Eltz Castle:
