The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig trail runs for 218 kilometres on mostly natural tracks between Trier, Idar-Oberstein and Perl/Moselle, combining culture and wellness with scenic beauty. This premium-grade long-distance trail in the Saar-Hunsrück nature reserve takes in an impressive variety of landscapes: the vineyards and riverbanks of the Saar, Moselle and Nahe rivers contrast with the densely wooded hills and ridges of the Hunsrück uplands.
Trekking along its narrow paths in the midst of nature you truly feel you are off the beaten track. The level sections with spongy leaf mould underfoot, pretty meadows or tranquil spots beside brooks and streams are ideal for taking a breather, but if it's adventure you seek, look no further than the trail's sheer descents, unspoilt moorland, challenging craggy sections and awe-inspiring narrow ravines!
Starting with one of the highlights at the Cloef outlook with its spectacular view of the Saar Bow. The onward journey promises gorges, steep paths and impressive panoramas, heading for Weiskirchen with its unique micro-climate and spa facilities.
Grimburg Castle soon emerges into view. Its museum, which traces the history of the medieval castle and the witch trials held there, is followed up by others of note in Hermeskeil. Next comes the Celtic ring wall at Otzenhausen, before you continue across the ollberg hills to the Erbeskopf, the highest peak in Rhineland-Palatinate at 816 metres. A magnificent view is your reward at the top. Still on the Erbeskopf, the Hunsrückhaus has a sensory trail which opens up a world of new experiences.
From the upland moor at Morbach, you head over Mount Wildenburg, past the boulder scree on Mörschieder Burr hill and into the Nahe valley, finally arriving at Idar-Oberstein, which is famous for its gemstones. An alternative route from Hermeskeil to Kell (beautiful reservoir) runs past the Ruwer valley vineyards to the Roman town of Trier.
