Enjoy wine in Rheinhessen

The RS brand of Rheinhessen Silvaner wines is the region's flagbearer. Silvaner is one of the oldest varieties still cultivated today, its high levels of quality having assured its position as one of the best-known varieties. Along with other German wine regions, Rheinhessen is currently experiencing a red wine boom, with Dornfelder and Spätburgunder (pinot noir) now being grown in one third of the Rheinhessen wine region. Of course the best place to taste these wonderful wines is at a winery itself, in an idyllic courtyard at a wine estate or at a cosy wine tavern. And if you'd like to try a really quaint experience, call at one of the “cow chapels” – lovingly renovated cattle byres with cross-rib vaulting – where you can enjoy local wines in a rather unique atmosphere.

White wines of Rheinhessen

Silvaner
Silvaner is grown in 10% of the Rheinhessen wine region (25,000 hectares). It produces wines of the finest quality (Prädikatsweine). This mildly acidic white wine has aromas of fruit and meadow herbs. The perfect accompaniment to fish dishes and asparagus.

Riesling
Another star among German white wines, established in Rheinhessen since the 15th century. The steep, heat-retaining hillsides of the river valleys provide ideal growing conditions for Riesling. The “Roter Hang” in Nierstein and “Scharlachberg” in Bingen produce great Rieslings.

Müller-Thurgau
Müller-Thurgau is still Rheinhessen's leading grape variety (4,200 hectares of vineyards, 16% of total production). These pleasant, flowery, delicately fruity wines with their subtle nutmeg aroma continue to be well represented on wine lists in Rheinhessen and much further afield.

Red wines of Rheinhessen

Dornfelder
The most frequently planted grape variety in Rheinhessen (3,500 hectares). A dry red wine which can also be semi-dry or sweet. A very dark red in colour.

Spätburgunder (pinot noir)
This wine for discerning palates is the third most common among Rheinhessen's red wines. Cultivated mainly as a dry red wine but sometimes used for rosés or Sekt (sparkling wine).

Blanc de Noir (pinot noir) variant:
Spätburgunder (pinot noir) grapes are pressed immediately after being harvested. Their pale juice is then used to produce an exquisite white wine from red grapes.

Regent
A fiery, almost mediterranean new variety. Planted in Rheinhessen since 1994 and now representing 800 hectares. Especially popular with organic wine growers because of its mildew fungus resistance.
