Mainz "Great Wine Capital"

Mainz and the surrounding Rheinhessen wine region belong to the Great Wine Capitals Global Network, keeping company with world-famous wine areas.

Mainz boasts a vast 1000-year-old cathedral, a perfect backdrop for the sea of lights which illuminate the yearly Christmas market during the Advent season. You won’t be able to overlook Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the printing press; Mainz has dedicated the Gutenberg Museum, the World Museum of Printing and the Johannisfest at the end of June to its most famous son. Prepare to be overwhelmed by the heavenly blue light of St. Stephan’s Church caused by the Chagall Windows, which are unique throughout the world.

City life at Worms

Worms is associated with the Song of the Nibelungs, an epic tale of love and sorrow, belligerence and pride. It dates back over 2,000 years and is one of Germany's oldest towns. The red sandstone Cathedral of St. Peter has remarkable animal sculptures and is a fine example of Romanesque architecture. Its 13th century appearance has been largely preserved. Worms is synonymous with high-quality culture and history, including the annual Nibelung Festival.

Cow chapels are historical architectural features in the wine-growing region

Culinary delicacies in a barn? This is not unusual in Rheinhessen, where cow byres often feature a unique architectural style! The history of Rheinhessen's cross-vaulted ceilings, also known as "cow byres" is a thrilling one! Chapel-like cow barns, constructed to look like old monastery refectories, were built in the mid-19th century, in the hope that the cross-vaulted ceilings would reduced the risk of fire. Several years ago, a number of dedicated wine-growers breathed new life into these unique features of Rheinhessen architecture. The former cow barns were transformed into intimate wine cellars and wine taverns, in which events, farm festivals and small concerts could also be held.
