Burg Berwartstein

Erlenbach bei Dahn · Pfalz

Berwartstein castle/D

Berwartstein castle is one of the most impressive and most visi- ted castles in the Palatinate region. The castle, first mentioned in 1152, is located on a high sandstone rock and disposes of a 104-meter-deep-well. Permanent disputes, sieges, changes of ownership and fires have marked the condition of the castle. For a long time, any attempts of reconstruction have failed due to immense construction costs. Berwartstein castle owes its current appearance mostly to the reconstruction initiated by Theodor Hoffmann at the end of the 19th century. It is the only inhabited castle in the Palatinate region and open to visits. A viewing platform situated below the top of the main tower offers a large view over the whole southwest of the Wasgau region as far as French Alsace.
