The romantic Egg Market (Eiermarkt) square was for centuries the centre of the Old Town, and was where the fruit, fish and potters’ markets were held. No other square in the town has quite such historic flair, with St. Nicholas’ Church (Nikolauskirche), half-timbered houses and the narrow lanes of the “meat district” or Metzgerviertel. In the centre of the egg market stands a sculpture showing how Kreuznach’s master butcher Michel Mort saved his lord, the Count of Sponheim, in the Battle of Sprendlingen in 1279. Sculptor Robert Cauer created the statue in 1902. Robert Cauer was a young member of the internationally successful Cauer dynasty of sculptors which had been living and working in Bad Kreuznach for over 200 years. Internationally renowned, the Cauers also operated ateliers in a number of major European cities.
