Until the Reformation, the Stiftskirche (a collegiate church) was a
famous place of pilgrimage to the grave of St. Goar, the missionary and
founder of the town of the same name. Even Emperor Charlemagne visited
the grave. The interior of the church is decorated with late Gothic
murals and reticulated vaulting. It also has an impressive pillared
pulpit and three magnificent tombs. The three-aisled Romanesque crypt
dating from the 11th/12th century is considered to be the finest between
Cologne and Speyer.
