César Baldaccini (1921-1998) was a French object
artist and sculptor who today is primarily associated with the Nouveau Réalisme
movement of the 1960s. One of his preferred materials was metal, which he
transformed into figurative forms. One of his best-known works is "Le
Pouce", a 12-meter-high reproduction of his thumb, which was set up in
1994 in the Paris district of La Défense, but dates back to a Rodin-Picasso
exhibition in 1965. Other reproductions have been exhibited around the world,
including Seoul and Jeddah.
