Schloss Stolzenfels | Koblenz

in 1250 and extended in the 14th century, Stolzenfels was destroyed by

the French in 1689. In 1823 the future King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of

Prussia was given the attractively situated castle ruin as a present.

Between 1836 and 1842 he

had it rebuilt as a summer residence to the plans of Schinkel the

architect. The interior is richly endowed with paintings, works of art,

weapons and armour. The murals in the castle chapel and in the small

knights’ hall are among the most important works of the Rhine’s High

Romantic period.
