Bernkastel-Kues – Discovery and recreation in a unique setting

The little town with many facets – Bernkastel-Kues with its unique setting in the River Mosel (Moselle) valley, embraced by vineyards, is among the most popular holiday locations for Mosel tourists. With the accent on an upmarket ambience or a traditional atmosphere imbued with local colour, around 130 licensed restaurants, hotels, guesthouses, wine taverns or cafés and no fewer than 4,000 beds are available for visitors to choose from.

Bernkastel-Kues is a town of many faces to suit various tastes. The town centre is truly impressive with its sumptuous ensemble of half-timbered houses – unique in the region – each house a jewel reflecting the architecture and lifestyle of the rural bourgeoisie in the Late Middle Ages.

History can be felt at every corner, from the ancient Romans to the time of Nicholas of Cusa, who helped bridge the gap from scholasticism to the philosophy of modern times. Always present in the air, like a constant aroma that quickens the senses, is the incomparable aura of the town's rich wine culture.

Outdoor enthusiasts and the more active vacationers will be pleased to find a well-signposted network of hiking and biking trails around and above Bernkastel-Kues. Various educational wine trails like the Moselsteig, a long-distance hillside track along both sides of the river, provide ideal opportunities to explore the incomparable countryside around the Mosel.
